GLOG
THIS IS THE NEW WORD FOR GRANNY LOG.
Granny Log consists of simply whatever a granny wishes to say...and in this particular case the granny who is saying it is the author of THE GRANNY MYSTIQUE. This Granny is Marguerite (Margie) Langstaff. She may quote Thomas Jefferson or Will Rogers...or a grandchild or a husband. It's simply GLOG. If you wish to respond go to ABOUT and send us your own GLOGGY e-mail.
GLOG: AGING WELL by George E. Vaillant, M.D. is a must read for Seniors. Dr. Vaillant explains The Granny Mystique in a logical, scientific and positive way. He gives us guidelines for "Aging Well" and explains how and why we are likely to develop in wonderful ways as we grow older.
As you know I wrote my book in response to the scientists who have been studying Grandmothers and who concluded that we have such an important effect on our grands, but who could not agree as to why that is so. My nine wisdoms address the things we do which makes us effective, but Dr. Vaillant tells us that it's because we grandmothers are busy developing along our timeline. We are less judgmental and tend not to take sides, and he even goes so far as to imply that perhaps we're better with our grands than we were with our own children.
Read this book. It's a little heavy and can't be read through in a single sitting, but you'll feel like throwing your fist in the air and yelling "YES" as you read.
HAPPY NEW YEAR. The new year is here, and it will indeed be happy. It will be what we make of it, so laugh a lot and play much. A grand opportunity presents itself to us for us to contribute to the rehabilitation and try to erase some of the miseries that the big waves have dealt to our friends in Asia. It is a disaster we'll never forget.
One of my favorite Christmas presents this year came from Katie who is in the 3rd grade. Katie gave me four small paperweights which she has made. Lined up on my desk they say, BE PROUD, AMERICA. Thank you, Katie. This is a message I hope you'll pass along to your own grands.
Eat lots of black eyed peas on New Year's. In case any of you don't know the old superstition, to eat black eyed peas on News Year's means you'll have money all year long. Sure beats having to budget all the time!
Nice glog to think about for this day!

Grandmothers know that helping those less fortunate brings more rewards than any competition, and these same grannys are kind in ways which are contagious. This discussion in Chapter Five in THE GRANNY MYSTIQUE includes recognition that so many of today's moms are busy juggling careers, families and homemaking. To have a granny who plants kind seeds of caring for the less fortunate is welcome in any family.

A PRAYER (Wisdom #9: And always Grandmothers smile!)
So far today, God, I've done alright. I haven't gossiped, haven't lost my temper, haven't been greedy, nasty or self-indulgent. I'm very thankful for that. But in a few minutes I'm going to get out of bed and from then on I'm going to need a lot more help. AMEN.

A SMILE (ALSO WISDOM # 9
A grandmother was surprised by her 7 year old grandson one morning. He had made her coffee. She drank what was the worst cup of coffee in her life. When she got to the bottom, there were three of those little green army men in the cup. She said, "Honey, what are these army men doing in my coffee?" Her grandson said, "Grandma, it says on TV, "The best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup!"

WAY DOWN by Alex Langstaff
Wow. Water, sun and mist high above
Every time I come to see it I fall in love.
And I do not care about the long walk - so be it!
Cliffs, birds, everywhere - surrounding the waterfall way, way, down.
Year after year I come to see it. I hesitate.
Don't look down, I say, way down into the noisy drop.
Down, way down and no where for the droplets to stop.
I stop, lean over the bar and listen, my eyes closed shut.
Oh, it whispers in my ear, swish, silence, swash.
Sometimes I am scared, consumed by the fear-because I am
Wary of the fall that beckons, if I lose my footing. It's so sheer.
Last summer a glorious sunset lulled me asleep.
Needing proof of this dream, I took a photo. But still I didn't look down, way down into the noisy drop.
Now winter, I draw closer to the edge and imagine, my body going flop way down, into that noisy drop.
But I shake off my visions of collisions and focus on my very important decisions.
I step forward and look down, way down. What wonders, creatures and things will I see, through winter's damp breath of mist?
I'm blinded by a spectacular display, a performance of sparkling water encrusted with ice and snow. It is so extravagant.
How much is the asking price for a slice of this icy paradise?
The thought of owning this white bliss gives me an electric glow from head to toe.
I had built up the nerves to face my fear. I had looked down that cliff, way down at that noisy drop, and now my heart roars.
WELL DONE, ALEX.
